JBL Boombox vs JBL Xtreme: A Detailed Comparison

JBL Boombox vs JBL Xtreme: A Detailed Comparison

Spread the love

When it comes to portable speakers, the one brand that comes first to mind for every enthusiast is JBL since it is one of the best audio companies in the world. They are known for their top of the class products and sensational audio quality. Amongst all of their speakers, two are always compared to each other, the JBL Boombox vs JBL Xtreme.

These two JBL speakers have gained a ton of popularity individually for their fantastic features, so it only makes sense that we make a thorough comparison of the two products to help you decide which one you should possibly settle for.

About the Company

JBL or James B. Lansing Sound, Inc. is an American company owned by Harman International Industries and is well known to manufacture loudspeakers and its associated electronics. There are two divisions in the company namely JBL Consumer and JBL Professional. The former is known to produce audio equipment for the home market whereas the latter is known to produce only professional equipment for studios, tour sounds, cinema markets, and so on.

JBL Boombox vs JBL Xtreme

For a thorough comparison between the two speakers, we decided to compare the speakers on the basis of several individual aspects. These include:

  1. Build Quality

Both the JBL Boombox and the Xtreme are quite large and robust. They feature a mesh based fabric exterior which is designed to keep the moisture of the enclosures. When the speakers are kept side by side, it is undeniable that the JBL Boombox is a significantly bigger speaker and also weighs more.

In all honesty, the JBL Boombox looks like a larger version of the Xtreme but only with a handle. In terms of its dimensions, the Boombox has a measurement of 10 x 19.5 x 7.7 inches and weighs about 11.6 pounds, whereas the Xtreme measures 5 x 11 x 4.83 inches and weighs only 4.7 pounds.

  1. Waterproof Rating

The Boombox is waterproof and has a rating of IPX7. This waterproof feature is significantly different from the Xtreme which is splash proof. By this, we mean to say that you can submerge the Boombox in about one meter of water for about half an hour. Furthermore, if you just leave it, then the speaker will float.

However, this isn’t the case for the Xtreme. This only has an IPX4 rating and can survive maybe some water spillage but can no way survive being dunked in water.

  1. Other Features

Both the speakers though are designed to be used as a power bank. The Xtreme can offer power to a device with its 10,000 mAh battery while the Boombox can charge two devices at once with the 20,000 mAh battery. With that being said, the Xtreme has a playback time of up to 15 hours whereas the Boombox will offer you about a whole day of playback time. Both are volume dependent as well.

Both of the speakers have rechargeable ports that are placed under the rubber seal. Both speakers also have an AUX port, but the Boombox has a port for a wall adapter.

  1. Connectivity

When it comes to the connectivity, the Boombox is definitely better than the Xtreme. JBL Xtreme has decent connectivity but is not that great.

The connection with devices is pretty solid and does not experience any sort of stuttering when the devices are near obstacles. But, if there is a wall between the two, then you will experience signal drops.

The Boombox, on the other hand, has fantastic connectivity. The device and the speaker can be kept as far as 30 feet even with some obstacles between the two. Once the device is paired and connected to the speaker for the first time, it will only take a couple of seconds to connect to it again.

The JBL Boombox and the Xtreme are optimized in a manner that they can sync with other speakers that are built with the same syncing technology. The Xtreme features the Connect which is capable of linking other Connect-enabled speakers, whereas the Boombox features the Connect+ and it links to other Connect+ enabled speakers such as the Pulse 3 and Flip 4.

Connect+ will allow you to sync up to 100 Connect+ to one another. This is significantly more than the Connect.

  1. Sound Quality

The JBL Boombox goes a step further with its audio quality by allowing its user to tailor the sound to the environment with two completely different modes of listening, which are Outdoor and Indoor. As obvious as they sound, Indoor is best suited when using the speaker indoors, and the Outdoor mode is perfect when using the speaker outside.

We are certain you may be wondering what these modes sound like. The outdoor mode adds more of an audible boost to the bass which will compensate for the sound that is typically lost naturally when you play music outdoors.

Furthermore, the Boombox has a wider soundstage, a significantly better bass, and the volume is extremely loud. We could not handle it at the highest volume.

The Xtreme is definitely not as great as its counterpart, but it is still a decent speaker in terms of sound. It offers a nice, full, and even a punchy sound signature.

  1. Overall Performance

When it comes to the overall performance, both the speakers will offer you a stellar performance. However, if you are looking to invest in one, in particular, then there are a couple of things you should consider.

The Boombox has a louder volume, wider soundstage, Connect+, but a significantly higher price tag. The Xtreme, on the other hand, is lighter, has decent audio quality, but uses Connect, which is an older version for syncing with other portable speakers. However, the price tag on this is significantly lower than the Boombox.

When it comes to deciding between JBL Boombox vs JBL Xtreme, it goes without saying that the former is a significantly better speaker but will cause a massive hole in your pocket.  On the contrary, the Xtreme is cheaper but its features seem to be old already. This leaves us to wonder that the product may be obsolete soon.

That said, unless money isn’t a priority, we would highly recommend the Boombox over the Xtreme. After all, it is still newer and a better speaker, so it is an investment that you won’t regret and will last you for a long time.

Great comparison. I have never used any of them but your review was thorough to make the difference between the JBL extreme and JBL Boombox much clearer.

I fall in love with the JBL Boombox because of the 20 000mAh power which can charge two devices and also because of the sound quality. When buying speakers, no body would ignore sound quality. JBL Boombox’s indoor and outdoor sound control makes it perfect for any music fan.

Thank you so much
