Not everyone is familiar with what a boombox is. For kids and the younger generation, portable music is an easy and effortless thing, with many options to choose from including MP3 players, iPods, Bluetooth speakers, etc. Even your smartphones can be used to enjoy your favorite songs on the go with the help of a headphone.

But for the older and middle-aged population, boomboxes bring back a memory of their childhood and teenage years. In those days, it was nearly impossible to pass by a street without finding loud music playing through a boombox and people moving their heads to the beat. This is not to say that boomboxes have become extinct or have been outdated.

Boomboxes continue to be an important tool in the arsenal of any good music lover; they still play an important role on the hip-hop scene, and in the music culture as a whole.

What is a boombox?

A boombox is a rather large transistorized tape or CD player. They have two or more speakers and also come with AM/FM functions. One of the most defining and recognizable features of a boombox is its handle; all boomboxes come with a handle that can be used to carry them around.

The boombox is closely connected to the American hip-hop culture and had an important role in its rise in the last century.

Boomboxes were introduced in the US in the mid-1970s. Since then, there have been many advancements and improvements in the basic model. The need for louder sound and more bass has led to the increase in the size and power of the boomboxes.

By the 1980s, they had grown to the size of suitcases. Boomboxes today come with many new and advanced features. There are also boomboxes that have Bluetooth connectivity that allow you to connect to other devices. They also come with MP3 and iPod connectivity making them easier and more functional.

With the increase in the need for bass, most boomboxes also have a heavy metal casting to handle the vibrations caused by it. Most boomboxes today come with an AC charger for wall outlets; they can also be powered by batteries.

Phillips introduced the first boombox onto the global market. Since then, more companies like Grundig, Sony, Toshiba, Sanyo, JVC, etc., have also brought out their own models. Most of these were produced in Japan during its introduction, but more European and American companies have also come out with their own models.

Advantages of using a boombox

Even though there are more compact and portable wireless speakers available on the market, boomboxes still have some advantages over wireless speakers. For one, they are still considered a style symbol and must-have for all real music lovers.

They can also be used to connect to the radio with the help of its AM/ FM connectivity. And as most boomboxes come with Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, they can be used as a replacement for your wireless speakers; this means that if you are into music and boomboxes and are willing to carry it around, then your money is well spent.

Disadvantages of a boombox

The main disadvantage of using a boombox is their size. Their bigger sizes of the boombox make them less portable when compared to the newer speakers. This has negatively affected the boombox’s popularity, particularly for the newer generation. They also have a lower battery life and limited functionality when compared to the new speakers.

Even though the popularity of the boombox has suffered a hit, it is slowly coming back to popular use. The improvements in technology have allowed boomboxes to compete with its younger and more modern versions. They are a style symbol and a reminder of our childhood, and also the rise and growth of hip-hop. They will always continue to hold a dear place in our hearts for years to come.
